Beer Styles

08 March 2012 - comments

It was interesting the other day that other people seem to think the way I do about beer styles  see here for a really fresh take on the idea  http://aleheads.com/2012/02/28/repost-a-new-approach-to-beer-styles/. No matter what the lovers of Michael Jackson may think they are Luddites living in the past. I have great respect for Jackson and his books which provide me and I am sure loads of other brewers, full time or amateur, lots of ideas and inspirations.. The arrival of the New World Hops has changed the Beer drinking scene to another sensation of aroma and taste that was just not there 2 years ago. Those American and Australian / New Zealand hops have revolutionized the British drinking scene. Who had have thought the arrival of new world hops could change the drinking scene so much.  Bland boring brown bitter or hoppy citrus blonde ales, with those amazing aromas of gooseberries, passion fruit, pineapple, mango, you name it.

So how with this plethora of tastes and aroma  that are blurring all distinctions how can we carry on recognizing beer styles, that are  not there anymore . Beer styles are dead and the craft brews have made it so.

About Okells - BREWING TRADITION SINCE 1850

Okell's award winning brewery has been producing the finest ales for over 150 years. Situated in the Isle of Man, the brewery nestles in the unique countryside of the island with its mountain springs, rolling glens and pure shores.

The Isle of Man is internationally recognised for its natural produce, and all our beers are brewed in accordance with the Island's famous Brewing Purity Laws which, similar to the Bavarian Beer Laws, forbid the use of any additives as a substitute for the natural brewing ingredients of malt, sugar and hops.
